LIMS BOX Launch: Real Tools for Real Labs

I've spent the last two years watching small clinical and environmental labs make a choice that shouldn't exist: pay $500k/year for enterprise LIMS software you'll use 20% of, or manage compliance in spreadsheets and risk audit callbacks.

I'm a scientist. I've run labs. I know the gap between what enterprise software vendors claim and what actually gets implemented in a 10-person operation. So we built LIMS BOX to close that gap—not by redesigning LIMS from scratch, but by building what labs actually use, shipping it, and letting labs tell us what's next.

Why LIMS Sucks for Small Labs

The LIMS market is built for 200-person organizations. Enterprise vendors have 18-month sales cycles, 50-person implementation teams, and price tiers that start at $50k/month. A 10-person lab running $50M in annual tests doesn't fit the math. So they don't get LIMS.

Instead, they get spreadsheets.

I've watched lab managers track:

• Personnel certifications in Google Sheets, updating by hand every time someone completes training. When someone leaves, the institutional knowledge leaves.


• Compliance checklists in PDF forms, filled out on paper, scanned, lost in email folders. Auditors ask for a 3-year trail and you spend 40 hours hunting.


• Survey results and test data exported one file at a time into reporting pipelines. Automation is a joke; it's copy-paste between systems.


• Sample chains of custody in notebooks because the inventory system doesn't integrate with the LIS.

None of this is weird. It's what happens when your choices are "enterprise theater" or "build it yourself."

What LIMS BOX Is

LIMS BOX is tooling for labs that want compliance rigor without the enterprise tax.

We're not rebuilding the entire LIMS ecosystem. We're building the parts that break first: personnel tracking, compliance artifacts, export pipelines, audit trails.

Our hypothesis: if we ship real, specific features based on how labs actually operate—not how vendors imagine they operate—we'll earn our place in the stack.

What we're shipping today:

1. Personnel Pack v1.5: Staff certification tracking, training log management, competency sign-offs, audit-ready PDF exports.
2. CLIA Tracker: Compliance checklist framework, tracking for common regulatory requirements, published methodology (not a black box).
3. Survey-Ready Export: Labs can pipe their test results into reporting systems without manual export work.
4. Audit Trail: Every action logged. We're not hiding the version history.

What this actually means:

A lab manager can now prove to an auditor that Sarah's phlebotomy certification is current, when she completed bloodborne pathogen training, and that the lab maintains a record of competency assessments. In PDFs that auditors can read, not spreadsheet tabs that get lost.

An environmental testing lab can export 500 samples to their reporting API without manually copying values between systems.

A clinical lab can track CLIA-specific compliance items alongside their own internal requirements, all in one place.

None of this is revolutionary. It's just the stuff that should have existed at $500/month instead of $500k.

How Personnel Pack Works

Personnel Pack is the first concrete receipt.

We built it because we watched a lab's training coordinator spend 8 hours a week managing certifications across three spreadsheets, three email inboxes, and a physical binder.

What it does:

• Certification tracking: Upload expiration dates. Set reminder windows (30 days out, 60 days out). Automatically alerts staff and managers.
• Training record management: Attach PDFs of training certificates. Link to internal training sessions (bloodborne pathogen, equipment-specific, etc.). Build institutional knowledge.
• Competency assessments: Simple checklist-based sign-offs. Manager confirms: "Sarah is competent on the GC-MS as of [date]." Auditable, timestamped.
• PDF export: Generate audit-ready documentation. "Here are all certifications as of [date]" in a single PDF.

We shipped this because: 1. Every small lab we talked to needed it. 2. No enterprise LIMS included it (or charged $100k+ as an add-on). 3. We could build it without rebuilding the entire LIMS system.

The beta got used by three clinical labs and one environmental testing firm over the last 4 months. We fixed bugs, added the PDF export pipeline, and now it's live.

What's Coming

We're listening to labs.

The next things on the roadmap:

• Sample tracking: Chain of custody, sample status, simple inventory management. Not trying to replace a 50-person manufacturing inventory system; building what a 10-person lab actually needs.


• Test result pipeline: Let labs define custom workflows for how results move from instrument → QA → release → archive. The enterprise vendors call this "configurable LIS." We're calling it "let labs define their own ops flow."


• Instrument integration: Start with the most common platforms (Roche, Abbott, etc.). Real connection, not fake API wrappers.


• Mobile check-ins: Staff certifications, sample receipt, training sign-offs. This stuff happens on phones in the lab, not in back offices.

Everything is being built around the same principle: if a lab does it, we build it so they don't have to do it manually.
